| Parents play a special role in the development of the player. Encouragement and setting good examples are the best way to teach your child about good sportsmanship and self-discipline. SUPPORT YOUR CHILD Support your child by giving encouragement and showing interest in their team. Emphasize that hard work and an honest effort are more important than winning the game--your child is always a winner despite the outcome! ALWAYS BE POSITIVE Remember that children learn from examples. Be a positive role model by applauding good plays by your child's team as well as the opposing team. REMEMBER: SOCCER IS FUN Your child, not you, is the one that is playing. It is important to not pressure your child to win. Playing the game is why the child is out there--not winning. A player who has his or her heart in the game is an advantage to the team. DON'T BE A SIDELINE COACH OR REFEREE The coaches and referees commit (and volunteer) a great deal of time to the game of soccer. They need the support of the parents. This means refraining from coaching or refereeing from the sidelines. |
